Heather has been visiting with our first graders for the past four years. Join her on her exciting research adventures for The Leaf Detective and Swimming with Sharks. Then, comparing first drafts with final copy, Heather will reveal how she brings her stories to life with revision. She’ll share how she transforms the spark of an idea into a book and discuss her research process.

Discover how these brave women inspire her and can inspire kids to be brave, set goals, and learn from failure. Heather will discuss her picture book biographies about trailblazing women. For Educators GIRLS WITH GRIT: RESEARCHING AND WRITING ABOUT BRAVE WOMEN

Grades 2-5, 45 minutes, up to 75 students. Heather will model important character-building strategies, such as setting goals and learning from failures, and students will come away with tips and tools that they can apply to their own writing and other facets of their lives. Comparing first drafts and sketches with final copy and art, students will learn the importance of revision both for the author and illustrator.

She will share her research process and how good detective work can make a story sing. In this fun, interactive program, Heather discusses the obstacles she has faced during her journey as a writer and how grit helps her during the research, writing, and revision process. What do all of Heather Lang’s books have in common? They're true stories about women who overcame obstacles and fought for their dreams.
